respects be disagreeable to the parties residing in Spring Gardens, and also in the supposition on the part of Sir John Davis, that the lot, be found unnecessarily large for the purposes required.

On examination by Captain Soames, it appears that the lots Nos. 29-30 are too small. I have therefore to solicit that His Excellency the Governor will allow the lot originally selected to be substituted, being the best adapted for the purpose.

I also mention that the parties in Spring Gardens are rather desirous than otherwise that the lot alluded to should fall into the hands of the Company.

of A. Campbell Esqr for the grant of the Lot No 644, formerly held by Dirome, Gray & Co.

The lots Nos 29 and 30 applied for by the Hongkong Steam Company as a grant, rent free, and recommended by Sir John For to the Rt. Honble the Earl Grey, have a frontage of 210 feet by a depth of 50 feet to high water mark. The ground between the road and the sea is low and irregular, which would require some considerable outlay thereon, and before it could be used in any manner by the Company, it would be necessary for them to reclaim a portion of the ground, and perhaps build a sea wall. The aggregate rental was £88.13.14.

The lot now applied for had originally a frontage of 223 feet, and an average depth of 106 feet; rental £181.0.72. These dimensions might now be enlarged. The ground
